Hitman Vardy puts Leicester back on the scene
After Euro 2016 frustration with England, Jamie Vardy will have been keen to prove a point that turning down a move to Arsenal to stick with the defending champions was the right decision, and the Foxes’ top scorer last term wrote himself back into the goalscoring charts after finishing off a typical Leicester move.
So often profiting from through-balls into feet, Vardy used his pace to race away from Jordi Amat and Federico Fernández to latch onto Danny Drinkwater’s pass and finish cooly via the woodwork at Lukasz Fabianski’s near post. The opportunity for the ball through came from some sensational one touch football on the edge of their own box from the Foxes, and Vardy’s finishing touch was the very least that Leicester deserved after dominating possession against Swansea. Getting the England hitman back on the scoresheet will be a massive boost after Leicester had barely a sniff at goal in their first two fixtures of the new season.
Teams are now setting up to frustrate Leicester now that they hold the title of defending champions, which Hull did to great effect on the opening day, and it is the challenge of having to break teams down rather than profit on the break from team’s setting out to come out at them that will be one of the most testing tasks for Leicester this season. Though Saturday’s win over the Swans is encouraging progress, and getting Vardy firing again can only bode well for Ranieri’s men.
