Refereeing inconsistencies still plague football

The performances of referees have been a real talking point this season, particularly in relation to inconsistent decision-making. This match featured two debatable calls that arguably affected the outcome of the match. John Moss, the official in the middle, awarded a penalty for a tug by Marcus Rojo on Harry Maguire, which appeared soft, and then waved away United’s own penalty claims when Chris Smalling was hauled down by Huddlestone in the second half when through on goal. Mourinho was clearly angry about the two decisions, which was evident in a tetchy post-match interview with Sky Sports. Refereeing errors are inevitable but as long as there is consistency, most managers and supporters will grudgingly accept them. What they can’t abide, however, is two similar incidents resulting in different outcomes. Mourinho has cause to feel aggrieved in that respect, even though it did not prevent his side from qualifying for the final.
