Ross Barkley still isn’t the finished product
Most in the game accept that Ross Barkley has bags of potential and could go on to become a key player for club and country but he continues to be hugely inconsistent. Dispossessed once and failing in his only dribble and losing out in his only aerial duel, the Englishman failed to stamp any influence onto the game with just 25 passes in his 45 minute display.
If Barkley is to go on to become a major talent he must stamp out this inconsistency which has seen him miss out on Sam Allardyce’s England squad once already since the former Sunderland manager’s appointment as Three Lions boss. Despite scoring against Tottenham and showing glimpses of quality in the early stages of this season, he failed to impress at the Stadium of Light.
Kudos must go to Ronald Koeman for the courageous decision to replace him with Gerard Deulofeu at half time, and the Spaniard shone and made space for Lukaku to take his chances with aplomb as Sunderland struggled to cope with his pace, off the ball movement and trickery.
