Three things we learnt from Chelsea’s late 2-1 victory over Watford

Watford tactically strong but struggle to hang on

For much of the contest, Walter Mazzarri seemed to have the beating of compatriot Antonio Conte, and he did so with tactics Conte himself favours; by pressing and getting wide players far up the pitch, with Nordin Amrabat and Jose Holebas causing Chelsea’s full-backs numerous problems and conspiring to get in behind. Chelsea had more of the ball, but Watford were good value for their lead given their strong adherence to Mazzarri’s set-up, Capoue rifling home from Adlene Guedioura’s cross.

It was two in two games for Capoue having scored in last week’s match at Southampton, but it was the same story again back in Hertfordshire, Watford just couldn’t hold onto their lead after Conte’s changes kick-started the Blues and the home side eventually caved in under the pressure.

Watford have now surrendered a lead to drop points in two successive games, but it is still early days and it is something Mazzarri still has time to resolve, but he must do so quickly if his team are to really start getting points on the board.
