Batshuayi the real deal whilst there is still room for Fabregas

He may have only played 23 minutes, but Michy Batshuayi made one huge impact in the time that he had and that was enough to be deemed worthy of man of the match. The promising youngster went some way to proving why his price-tag at Marseille was so high, racking up the second highest game total of individual shots for any player, made four key touches in the opposition penalty area, hit the woodwork and netted a vital goal to restore parity with ten minutes left.

Whilst the youngster’s impact was vital in bringing a spring back into Chelsea’s step, the experience and genius of veteran Cesc Fabregas was just as vital. He assisted the winner, his 26th since returning to the Premier League in 2014, more than any other player, and after sitting out Chelsea’s opening victory, his impact here will go a long way towards proving his worth to his new boss.

With the strong cameo that he had, it is unlikely that Fabregas will be suffering the same treatment to Joe Hart at Manchester City any time soon- he is just too precious to Chelsea to be frozen out of the side. Whereas Kanté and Matic provided an ideal defensive screen from deep, Fabregas is the incisive pass master that can craft goalscoring opportunities in the final third. His pass to Costa was perfectly-weighted, and his teammate duly obliged with a wonderful finish to take the points back to the Bridge.
