Everton’s slow backline couldn’t keep up

Ronald Koeman opted to field a back three, with Phil Jagielka, Ashley Williams and Ramiro Funes Mori playing in a defensive set-up with Bryan Oviedo and Seamus Coleman playing as wing-backs, but the system struggled to cope.

Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams are both strong and powerful central defenders who should have been able to cope with the threat of of a physical Diego Costa up front, but they couldn’t handle his movement when teamed up with the pace and space exploitation of Pedro and Eden Hazard as they bound forwards and drifted inside.

Diego Costa is not well known for his pace, but he frequently ran at Phil Jagielka in his central role and exposed the former Sheffield United man for his lack of it. With Funes Mori and Williams not the quickest either, it left them doing much of the work for Jagielka and gave new opportunities to the two wide attackers to exploit the gaps left in behind.
