Familiar failings raise their ugly head for Arsenal
Arsenal have a terrible record at Stamford Bridge and today was a throwback to previous forgettable afternoons in West London. In many ways this month has been symbolic of the Gunners’ fortunes over the past few seasons. There has been the sublime, such as last weekend’s 5-0 hammering of Southampton in the FA Cup, and the ridiculous in the shape of Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Watford. Chelsea entered this contest as favourites but Arsene Wenger, still serving a touchline ban, would have been hoping for a reaction to their shock midweek reversal. It didn’t materialise. Much has been written about a perceived lack of leadership in the Arsenal ranks and a mental weakness when the pressure is on. Wenger’s men had clawed their way back into the title reckoning but just when they needed to maintain their impressive form, it has deserted them. Arguably, they play the most attractive football in the Premier League. But the fact they haven’t won it since 2004 is telling. Key defensive issues have not been addressed.
