Three things we learnt from Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Hull City

Hull much-improved but need reinforcements

Marco Silva has made a promising start to life as Hull City manager after replacing Mike Phelan earlier this month. The 39-year-old won his inaugural match against Bournemouth and his side gave a good account of themselves at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening.

The Portuguese manager switched to three central defenders and Harry Maguire was especially impressive at the heart of the Hull defence. However, The Tigers lacked quality in the final third and never really looked like causing Chelsea’s defence too many issues.

Robert Snodgrass, who has either scored or assisted 50% of Hull’s goals this season, was omitted from the starting line-up after being targeted by West Ham United during the transfer window whilst the visitors were also without Jake Livermore who has completed a £10,000,000 move to West Bromwich Albion.

Silva did deploy three of his new signings at Stamford Bridge, (Omar Elabdellaoui, Evandro, and Oumar Niasse), but you sense that The Tigers will require a number of new additions before the end of January if they are to have a genuine chance of securing survival.

The Tigers are two points from safety and despite their much-improved performances against Bournemouth and Chelsea they still have plenty of work to do.
