Three things we learnt from Birmingham’s 1-1 derby draw with Aston Villa

Agbonlahor cameo suggests he still has something to give

Gabriel Agbonlahor was subject to a hostile reception at St. Andrew’s, more so than the returning manager Steve Bruce. The former England striker came off the bench for his first appearance since March, and although he is often the face put to Villa’s fall from grace, his nine minute cameo proved more fruitful than the past year.

Agbonlahor was positive in going forward and troubled the retreating Blues defence as Villa broke forward with some incisive runs, and he may have teed Ross McCormack up with a goal had the Scot not fired straight into the legs of a defender.

If this is a sign of things to come for Villa and that Agbonlahor can roll back the years and begin to score goals in the division as he did in the Premier League for years, it poses a real selection headache for Bruce with regards to his forward line. Ross McCormack started out on the right with Jonathan Kodjia central and Jordan Ayew out on the left. With Jack Grealish yet to return, Rudy Gestede also on the bench and now veteran Agbonlahor chomping at the bit again, Bruce has a positive conundrum to solve. Admittedly though, it is one of the better problems one can have as a manager.
