Arsenal’s Pressing Ineffective Against The Long Ball
A feature of the Gunners’ recent good form has been their work rate without the ball and intent to press opponents from the front. This has been a great attacking weapon for them, as they have counter attacked well after winning back possession in the press/counter press.
Teams are at their most disorganised the second they lose possession, and so many goals are scored after a turnover. However, Burnley seemed well aware of this fact and didn’t try to play out from the back or through midfield. Dyche’s men bypassed the press more often than not by hitting Sam Vokes with a long ball. This meant the ball tended to keep coming back, but they avoided gifting Arsenal the chance to attack when there was space.
The Gunners did have some counter-attacking opportunities, but their decision making when they had a numerical advantage was poor for most of the game.
