This was a bridge too far for hungover Southampton

It had only been three days since that famous night at Anfield, where Southampton stunned Liverpool to reach the final of the EFL Cup. Supporters were in good spirits before kick-off but the party atmosphere soon fizzled out. Unsurprisingly, Saints manager Claude Puel had made 10 changes – a decision that backfired in spectacular fashion. Arsenal were much changed themselves but found their rhythm immediately. Once they had coasted into a 3-0 lead inside 35 minutes, the game was all but over as a contest. Southampton fans will be disappointed to have surrendered so meekly, but perhaps they can forgive this one given the heroics of Wednesday. This was very much a case of after the Lord Mayor’s show for Saints. Nevertheless, they can refocus on the Premier League, which has not been plain sailing by any means this season, before looking forward to a date at Wembley Stadium against Manchester United next month.
