Three things we learnt from Arsenal’s 6-0 win over Ludogorets

Ludogorets tactics were the same as the colour of their kit

The visitors threatened in the first 40 mins or so, moving the ball from the back seamlessly towards a pacy crop of forwards. David Ospina made a couple of good stops, and there was enough evidence to suggest they might trouble Arsenal in the return game. Misidjan, Wanderson and Jonathan Cafu were their leading lights, and it seems as if the last third is where they spend most of their transfer budget.

Without the ball however, they tried to push up the pitch and press Arsenal high. This was an admirable, if naïve policy. In the early stages they were fairly effective at this, but whenever Arsenal got through the first line of pressure they were in business. Ludogorets’ back four squeezed up the pitch, which made them sitting ducks against the speed of Chamberlain, Sanchez and Walcott. The Bulgarian side played a greater part in this contest than the scoreline suggest (they actually had the majority of possession) but were green in more ways than one.
