Three things we learnt from Arsenal’s 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich

Laurent Koscielny is irreplaceable in the Arsenal back-line

The collapse in the second half was remarkable and highlighted the defensive concerns that Arsenal have at the moment. A huge reason for that was the departure of Laurent Koscielny who was forced off with an injury. He was replaced by Gabriel and the Gunners conceded four minutes later. Some may suggest it was a coincidence, but regular watchers of Arsenal will testify to the importance of the French international. He organises the back four and often bails his side out with last ditch defending.

Although his individual ability can be overrated by Arsenal supporters at times, it is clear that he is important to the side’s set-up. Arsenal managed to restrict Bayern Munich to few clear-cut chances in the first half, despite the home side dominating possession. It wasn’t a typical Arsenal performance as they had to work hard and dig in, but they were doing okay. They would have been hoping to push on after the break, but the injury to Koscielny was a major blow and they never really recovered from it.
