Hector Bellerin Was Badly Missed
Carl Jenkinson is a popular figure among Arsenal fans and his performances are always wholehearted. However, he cannot provide the technical assurance and raw speed going forward that Bellerin can. Wenger likes his wingers to move inside to receive the ball between the lines, so it is important that at least one Arsenal full back can provide width. Jenkinson got forward quite well at times and whipped in some good crosses in the first half, but doesn’t quite bring the rapier-like threat of Bellerin. Moreover, Arsenal are trying to press higher up the pitch and hold a higher line so need all the speed they can get in defensive areas. Jenkinson has plenty of pace, but isn’t the most composed in one against one situations. Teams are consistently trying to target Arsenal with counter attacks focused on the wide areas, so full back is a crucial position for the Gunners.
