Three things we learnt as record-breaking Rooney salvages draw for Manchester United against Stoke

Form is temporary, class is permanent

At 31-years-old, Wayne Rooney knows that his best playing years are behind him and that he can’t compete with the exuberant youth of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard in attack.

Rooney has only started two of United’s last nine Premier League matches, and has struggled to make an impact whilst on the pitch – but class is permanent, and just like many a time before he popped up when Manchester United needed him most to rescue a last-gasp point away to Stoke.

It was almost as if everybody knew that his record-breaking goal, which now makes him United’s highest ever goal-scorer, would come with a hint of drama attached to it – many people thought the script was written for last week against Liverpool, but instead it was to be six days later with a sensational injury-time free-kick, in trusty dramatic circumstances.

Perhaps testament to Rooney as a person, despite the enormous feat that he had just achieved in style, there were no celebrations; a fist-pump was enough for him, with all of his thoughts geared on getting the ball back to the half-way line and re-starting the match to push for a winner.

In a modern era of egotistical footballers, Rooney showed that Manchester United as a team has always been his priority.

Although the result will do nothing to help United’s top-four aspirations, Saturday afternoon belonged to one man who wrote himself into Manchester United legendary status forever.
