Struggling Hull are sinking fast
Hull City’s season will not be defined by a defeat against one of English football’s leading clubs, but one win in their last sixteen Premier League fixtures suggests that The Tigers are only heading in one direction.
In truth, Mike Phelan’s side produced a solid defensively display for over two-thirds of the fixture and were able to frustrate their more illustrious opponents for long spells of the game. However, the hosts failed to test the visiting defence and it was only a matter of time before Manchester City found a way to break through the massed ranks of gold and black shirts.
It was Chris Robertson’s mistake that all but ended Hull’s hopes of securing an unlikely point. The fullback clumsily brought down Raheem Sterling in the eighteen yard box and when Yaya Toure stroked home the penalty the match was all but over as a contest. It was the ninth penalty that The Tigers have conceded so far this season, four more than any other Premier League club.
Hull City now sit in the unenviable position at the foot of the table over the Christmas period, a predicament that only three teams in the previous twenty-four seasons have been able to escape from. Fortunately for Mike Phelan the transfer window will provide an opportunity to recruit some much needed reinforcements for the remainder of the campaign and The Tigers are certainly in dire need of some creative innovation in the final third.
In their current state, Hull are all but relegated. However, if Phelan can make some inspired purchases during January then his side may still have enough time to pull off a great escape of their own.
