United’s lack of ambition could cost them dearly
Down to ten men, few expected any different from Manchester United than to sit deep and try to play for the draw. With Jose Mourinho in charge, it came as little surprise to see his side switch to a 5-3-1 with defensive priorities.
That said, after going 1-0 down to N’Golo Kante’s strike, the Red Devils failed to offer anything going forward. Marcus Rashford had the only real chance as United were pinned back in their own half for almost the entirety of the second half.
Having been criticised for their defensive tactics in the Premier League against the likes of Liverpool, it seems that their decision to play defensively and look to threaten on the counter-attack could now have cost them in the FA Cup as well as in their pursuit of Champions League football through a top four finish in the Premier League.
