Chelsea eased their way to another comfortable victory in the Premier League on Saturday as they beat Swansea City 3-1 at Stamford Bridge, although the visitors were left frustrated after being denied a second-half penalty.
The Blues took another significant step towards being crowned champions of England as they moved eleven points clear at the top of the table and it is difficult to see anyone toppling Antonio Conte’s title bid with just twelve games remaining. It would take an unlikely combination of a complete capitulation and a remarkable run of form from their rivals for the Premier League title not to be located at Stamford Bridge in May.
Cesc Fabregas, on his 300th appearance in English football, produced a man of the match display and opened the scoring within twenty minutes. The Spaniard was able to latch onto a neat pull back inside the eighteen yard box and poke the ball through Jack Cork’s legs and into the net. However, the hosts were left stunned on the stroke of half time as Swansea equalised with their first shot on target when Fernando Llorente produced a prodigious header to level the scores.
Chelsea continued to dominate after the break but Cesar Azpilicueta was lucky not concede a penalty after he appeared to handle the ball with the game still finely balanced at 1-1. However, the host’s superior quality shone through with Pedro and Diego Costa securing a victory with two smart finishes.
Chelsea are destined to win title
Is there any stopping Chelsea?
The Blues eased to a 3-1 victory on Saturday and looked completely dominant against a Swansea City team that has proven in recent months that they can be a tough prospect to overcome under the guidance of Paul Clement. The dynamism of Chelsea’s midfield, led by the vision of Cesc Fabregas and the tireless energy of N’Golo Kante, helped to construct some sublime, sweeping attacking football that was always going to be too much for the visitors to hold back.
This was Chelsea’s 10th consecutive victory on home soil at Stamford Bridge and they now have an eleven-point gap over their title rivals at the top of the table. They already have 63 points, three more than at the same stage in 2014/15 when they were last crowned champions of England, and with just twelve game remaining in is hard to see anyone but Antonio Conte lifting aloft the Premier League trophy in May.
