Three things we learned from West Ham’s 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace

Clean sheets win matches

This was West Ham’s first clean sheet since their last victory, a 1-0 win over Bournemouth, and their first win since then as well. Whilst luck may well have been on West Ham’s side for much of the game, Adrian played well in goal and the back three of Winston Reid, Cheikou Kouyate and Angelo Ogbonna fought hard up against Christian Benteke and co.

The Hammers looked solid even up against Christian Benteke with their three at the back remaining disciplined and firm throughout. Cresswell and Antonio also did their jobs well, ensuring that they tracked back well to remain tight on Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend, something that many feared they may struggle to do, particularly with Cresswell playing for the first time in months.

With both of their wins this season coming by one goal to nil, Slaven Bilic will be keen to ensure that his side can maintain such defensive solidity and stop conceding as many goals as they had in recent weeks. If Bilic can do what he does best, and get his side organised and disciplined, they may well be able to rescue their season.
