Forgettable night for Akinfeev as poor European record continues

Europe hasn’t been kind to CSKA and Russia shot-stopper Igor Akinfeev this calendar year. After Russia’s group stage exit from Euro 2016, the Champions League has offered little respite in terms of club football, with three draws and three defeats for CSKA in their six games in Group E.

In those six games, Akinfeev has featured in a side that has shipped 11 goals, and he has now failed to maintain a clean sheet in his last 39 Champions League proper appearances, excluding qualifying matches, extending his own record in the competition.

The bizarre own goal from Alli’s headed effort certainly won’t have helped his personal pride, and defeat means his team miss out even on a Europa League place, finishing bottom of the group with three points and a goal difference of -6.

Better luck next year perhaps. The Russian top-flight season resumes in March.
