Moyes needs money to spend in January
This was not the return to Old Trafford that David Moyes would have wanted – his first since being sacked by the club in 2014 – but was one that, in his heart of hearts, he probably expected. The Black Cats set their stall out to be hard to beat, but that allowed the hosts to monopolise possession and create a series of chances.
It took until the 39th minute for United to break the deadlock but once they did, there was only ever one outcome. Moyes must have looked on enviously across the dugout at the amount of money Mourinho has had to spend since he’s been in charge.
In total contrast, the Scot has not spent a single penny during his time on Wearside, something that has to change in January is he is going to keep Sunderland in the Premier League.
Moyes is overly reliant on Jermain Defoe for goals – his side mustered only six shots against United and that is indicative of their away matches, which have yielded five goals. Moyes simply must be back in the transfer window.
