Phillipe Coutinho remains the Reds’ main man
Sadio Mane may have opened the scoring and Roberto Firmino may have produced a quality display as well, but it was clear that Phillipe Coutinho is still the main man for the Anfield outfit. His calm and composed dribble and finish gave what would be the matchwinning goal to capitalise on a poor clearance from Ben Foster showed just how effective the pressing style can be.
The Brazilian was influential in almost all of the Reds’ attacking play with six shots to his name and three chances created, two of which should really have been scored by his teammates. With three successful dribbles he proved a real menace as even the defensive might of Tony Pulis failed to handle him.
Now supported by a wealth of attacking threat, Coutinho has overcome criticism that his effective displays were inconsistent with support and assists that have sent him from a quality player to one who could become world class if he can maintain his influential displays.
