Riyad Mahrez, it’s fair to say, has not quite hit the majestical heights of last year. One goal and no assists have left many doubts over the form of the Algerian this season, but recent comments could soon change that. Mahrez confirmed this week one of the worst kept secrets in football – that Arsenal had tried to sign him in the summer.

“There was contact with Arsenal,” Mahrez told Canal Football Club. “But Leicester wanted to keep me and I was pretty expensive. I did not want to create a conflict when the offer came in.

“Personally, I think it is a good thing I stayed put. It’s now up to me to prove myself again.”

With this in mind, could the 25-year-old put any doubts in his mind now to one side, and begin to shine again on the pitch. It would certainly be the perfect occasion to do just that, on Saturday.
