Will Pochettino stick with three at the back?
In the North London derby, Tottenham lined up with three at the back, a theme that is beginning to emerge among the top clubs in England. Although they weren’t able to win the match, Tottenham did look much improved from the team that lost convincingly to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League. Toby Alderweireld is unlikely to feature against West Ham, which means that three at the back is a real possibility for Pochettino, especially after the team’s performance against Arsenal. It also provides the opportunity to switch formations mid game, which can help turn a game when things aren’t going the way the team had hoped.
Tottenham’s major strength is their two full backs, as both are excellent at going forwards and provide an extra edge to the side’s attack. In a formation with three at the back, they have more freedom to get forward and this can only be a positive thing. Both Kyle Walker and Danny Rose should be fit to start this weekend, and they could have a huge say in the game, especially if Pochettino sticks with three at the back. Another player that benefited from the change was Mousa Dembele. The midfielder was superb against Arsenal and will be keen to put in a similar performance against West Ham.
