Three things that we learnt: Tottenham 0-1 Bayer Leverkusen

They miss Alderweireld and Kane

Tottenham have built a good young squad, full of potential, but there isn’t the depth required to compete in both the Champions League and the Premier League. They are over-reliant on a few individuals and that was evident on Wednesday. The defence was extremely poor and it was clear that they missed Toby Alderweireld. Eric Dier isn’t a centre back any more and he struggled to step into the Belgian’s shoes. He made several errors and that had a negative effect on both Victor Wanyama and Kyle Walker, neither of whom played well. Tottenham have the best defence in the Premier League, but that could change if Alderweireld doesn’t return soon.

Harry Kane is the talisman of the Tottenham attack and they have missed him dearly since his injury last month. Vincent Janssen hasn’t adjusted to the Premier League yet and isn’t ready to be a starter for Tottenham, while Son Heung-min was ineffective on Wednesday. Their attack has been poor for weeks and Kane can’t return soon enough. He is back in training, which is great news for the club, but it could take him some time before he is at his best.
