David Wagner doesn’t have a plan B
It isn’t that the manager himself doesn’t have the tactical flexibility to develop an alternative style, but that the squad at Huddersfield doesn’t allow it. There isn’t much depth and there are few players outside of the first eleven that can come on and have a positive impact. They needed to change their style today after falling behind and opted to be direct with two centre backs operating as forwards.
Huddersfield had no better options available and that forced them into such a desperate tactic. It failed and Wagner will realise the limitations of his squad, especially those outside of the first eleven. This is another area where Huddersfield are much weaker than their promotion rivals and when injuries to key players strike, it is difficult to see them continue to win matches. There is a lot of positivity around Huddersfield and rightly so, but they need to be realistic about their aims. It is a season too soon for them to seriously challenge for automatic promotion.
