A tale of two goalkeepers

Boruc, the Bournemouth stopper, made a catastrophic mistake when he fluffed an attempted punch out from a corner, which fell kindly to McAuley to turn home for what proved to be the winning goal. The Poland international had begun the campaign in fine form, but his struggles have coincided with a downturn in results for the Cherries. He looks to be lacking confidence and may have been unsettled by the transfer rumour that linked the club with a move for Asmir Begovic in the January window. Boruc’s opposite number Ben Foster, however, was in inspired form. Aside from the opening goal, the Cherries had presented little attacking threat. But they forced the former England man into a couple of excellent saves in stoppage time. His effort to tip a goal-bound header by Tyrone Mings wide of the woodwork drew widespread disbelief from the visitors and rapturous applause from the home fans. It had deprived Bournemouth a much-needed boost, given their current malaise.
