“Goals are no longer a problem for Mourinho” – Three things learnt from Swansea City 0-4 Manchester United

Manchester United recorded their second consecutive 4-0 win of the season as they blew Swansea away at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday lunchtime.

It was not all plain sailing as both sides hit the woodwork in the opening exchanges, but Eric Bailly opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time as he pounced to poke home a rebound after Paul Pogba found space at a corner to challenge Lukas Fabianski.

After the break, United grew in confidence and found their stride. It was not until the closing stages when they turned that into goals though as Romelu Lukaku found the back of the net with ten minutes left on the clock.

Paul Pogba added his second of the season only minutes later with a smart chip over the Swansea goalkeeper after a superb run. Finally, substitute Anthony Martial added his second from the bench in as many games as his pace earned him space and his skill gave him the chance to produce a fine finish into the corner of the net.

Here are three things that The Boot Room learnt from the game…

Scoring goals is no longer a problem for Jose Mourinho

Where Manchester United struggled last season, they are exceeding this campaign. Whereas they struggled to find the goals to break down sides like West Ham or Swansea, this time around they are blowing them away. With creativity from the likes of Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in midfield and the superb finishing of Romelu Lukaku, they’ve got what it takes.

That was one of the areas where Mourinho’s side struggled most in his first season in Manchester. The Red Devils now seem capable of resolving their biggest weakness and as such, can surely expect to be contenders for the Premier League title come the end of the 2017/18 season.

Swansea have what it takes to stay up, but they need to produce consistently

For periods in the first half, Swansea City did more than hold their own. In fact, they even dominated and had chances to take the lead, such as Jordan Ayew’s smart finish which hit the crossbar and came inches away from catching out David de Gea. If they can keep that up, they’ll be more than safe.

However, they let their concentration slip. One error, leaving Paul Pogba free at a corner just before half-time, led to the opening goal which made the task a real battle for the Swans. Had the Welsh side found a bit of luck to take the lead, it could have been a different story, but they can’t afford to switch off for even a second.

Manchester United are easily rattled

Marcus Rashford may not be used to being booed, but that was the welcome that he got from Swansea fans after his dive against them at Old Trafford earlier this year. He seemed nervous and lacking in confident as a result, rushing into chances and being rash on the ball.

Paul Pogba too seemed riled. One or two hard challenges put him on edge and he lashed out with a needless late kick to earn a yellow card. From that moment on, he was walking on a tightrope as he tried to avoid a second. Against better opposition, United will not be able to carry a passenger like that.
