Matteo Darmian deserves more first team opportunities

Antonio Valencia missed out on Sunday and that provide a chance to Matteo Darmian. The Italian delivered a very good performance and made the most of the opportunity that was presented to him. He had a spell in the team earlier in the season, but he appeared to fall out of favour.

On Sunday, he reminded Jose Mourinho of his qualities with an excellent full-back display and helped his side to a clean sheet in the process.

During the match, he won four aerial duels and made six ball recoveries. This was in addition to an incredible 11 clearances that he made to relieve pressure on his team. He completed 100% of his tackles and was the defender to stand out the most at the Stadium of Light.

Although he lacks the attacking flair of Valencia, the 27-year-old is a reliable squad option to have and he proved his worth against Sunderland. He deserves more game time before the season is up.
