Leicester City have endeared themselves to Europe
It’s a cliché that has been doing the rounds for the last twelve months as far as Leicester City are concerned, but they really have experienced a fairy-tale year at the King Power Stadium.
Champions of England, and Champions League quarter-finalists; it’s a status that even the most loyal of Leicester fans couldn’t have dreamt about two years ago when they were fighting for survival.
Against a side that had only lost one out of their previous nine Champions League knock-out ties it was always going to be a tough ask, but the Foxes certainly didn’t disgrace themselves.
Narrow defeat in Spain was followed up by a draw at the King Power which they dominated and, although their European dream goes no further, Leicester have endeared themselves to the whole of Europe with the way they have equipped themselves and competed with the very best.
Once Jamie Vardy side-footed home the equaliser on the night Leicester even had the visitors well and truly rattled, twice being thwarted by excellent blocks inside the six-yard box as they piled on the pressure despite their two-goal deficit, and it showed an incredible character in the home squad.
It’s easy to forget that eight years ago, to the exact day, the Foxes were clinching promotion from League One against Southend – now fast forward eight years and they ran Atletico Madrid very, very close.
