Three things learnt as Leicester came from behind to beat Hull

Goalkeepers can be the difference

Eldin Jakupovic had a rotten day in goal for Hull. With his side leading by a goal to nil, against the run of play, the crucial thing was to make things difficult for Leicester. However, when Christian Fuchs drew his team level on 27 minutes, the Tigers’ ‘keeper made it all too easy.

Of course, he doesn’t deserve all the blame, Lazar Markovic made no effort to track Fuchs after his 1st 1-2 with Vardy, which allowed the fullback so much space in the box. But, having re-received possession, Fuchs’ shot was poorly hit. His strike lacked power and any care regarding accuracy, yet Jakupovic allowed it to squirm beneath his body.

This was a crucial point in the match and poor goalkeeping had cost Hull, it also wasn’t his only error. When Riyad Mahrez gave Leicester the lead just before the hour mark, Jakupovic got a hand to his low shot but failed to keep it out. Again, defending was poor, as the Algerian shouldn’t have been allowed space to shoot with his right foot, but having reached the effort, the Swiss ‘keeper should not have been beaten.

Later in the game, with the score at 2-1, Jakupovic’s counterpart, Kasper Schmeichel, pulled off a superb stop from Baye Oumar Niasse. The shot was heading for his bottom right corner, but the Dane got down at full stretch, with a strong hand, to concede only a corner. This was in the 84th minute and kept the home side narrowly ahead, before scoring a third in the final stages.
