Three things learnt as Everton inflicted Craig Shakespeare’s first defeat as Leicester City manager

Morgan’s absence leaves big gaps

One player that will be a huge miss for Leicester’s date with Atletico Madrid this week is the Foxes’ captain Wes Morgan, who Craig Shakespeare confirmed is ruled out for the quarter-final tie.

Morgan had been absent from the previous three Premier League matches before kick-off yesterday, and the Leicester boss announced pre-match that he won’t be fit enough to return to the side.

This will come as a huge blow for Leicester’s chances of keeping themselves in contention in the return leg at the King Power, with the 33-year-old excellent in the home victory over Sevilla.

The likely replacement is Tunisian centre-back Yohan Benalouane, who has filled in alongside Robert Huth for the past four matches; solid whilst keeping clean sheets against both Stoke City and Sunderland, he endured a torrid time against Everton and will be low on confidence for this week.

This is not ideal when he’s set to face up against the likes of Antoine Griezmann but Benalouane was at fault for three of Everton’s goals and simply looked out of his depth at Goodison Park.

He rushed into a reckless challenge too early to tackle Kevin Mirallas inside 30 seconds, with the ball falling to Tom Davies to tuck away, before losing the run of Lukaku to power a header into the net and draw Everton back level whilst he also lost the run of Jagielka to put the hosts ahead once again.

With Shakespeare likely to keep the faith and start him at the Vicente Calderon, he’ll have to quickly put Sunday’s loss behind him and show the dogged determination and discipline that Morgan does.
