West Ham aren’t quite home and dry just yet
Towards the end of January West Ham seemed to be cantering towards an uneventful mid-table finish, yet fast forward two months and now they’re well and truly dragged into a relegation battle.
Only five points separate them and Swansea City in 18th place – coincidentally their next opponents at the London Stadium on Saturday – and the Hammers need to find a way out of their current rut.
On Wednesday night Slaven Bilic’s side played like a team without a win in seven matches, and on the back of four consecutive defeats; they were lifeless, creating very little in the final third of the pitch, and were ultimately the architects of their own downfall with reckless and sloppy defending.
Based on form in the past five games, West Ham are the worst side in the Premier League and that will be a worry for Bilic who admitted himself post-match that his side are fighting for survival now.
Confidence is clearly low in the West Ham ranks and that translated into their play on the pitch, and with star-man Michail Antonio only lasting 45 minutes on his return, it was a night of few positives.
The only plus side that the Hammers can take is that they have the perfect chance to set the record straight and rectify a dismal, winless past two months with a much-needed win against fellow strugglers Swansea this weekend; it’s a cliché, but it certainly is the epitome of a ‘six-point’ match.
