Ozil’s timely return to form
After struggling to have an impact in recent months for Arsenal, midfielder Mesut Ozil popped up with a timely performance and help lead the Gunners to a confidence-boosting win over West Ham.
The German was outstanding at the Emirates on what was his 150th appearance for the club, celebrating it with a goal and an assist as he ensured his side broke down a defiant Hammers’ defence.
Not only did he score and turn provider, he created more chances than anyone else (five), completing three crosses and three take-ons as he looked to inspire a more attacking performance from the home side; only David Silva created more openings in the Premier League last night.
His contributions last night took his tally for the season to ten goals and ten assists in 33 appearances – the first time the 28-year-old has reached double figure since moving to Arsenal.
Quite telling from last night’s victory was also his defensive contributions; quite often criticised for being lazy and lacklustre in front of his own goal, Ozil made two interceptions, one clearance and three blocks to show that he means business as the Premier League season draws to its climax.
After a quiet spell in the past ten weeks, Mesut Ozil’s return to form – and more importantly return of confidence – could be the spark needed to help Arsene Wenger’s side reach the top four spots.
