Stick With The Proactive Pressing Game
Last season, Wenger appeared slightly muddled as to what direction he was trying to take Arsenal in. They had plenty of pace, and on paper looked like a team that could be a very effective counter attacking force. However, particularly against the smaller teams in the league, they resorted back to a slower style with plenty of sideways possession. This season, Wenger and the players seem fully committed to a certain style, based on pressing opponents high up the pitch and creating chances from turnovers. This is disturbing opponents, and they are better at dealing with a ‘parked bus’ because of this, though Burnley and Middlesbrough showed there is still work to do.
This style will be taxing on their legs, and it will mean they are slightly vulnerable to long balls over the top and counter attacks. However, this could be a price worth paying because Arsenal look so much more dangerous as an attacking force. Recent history shows that the league’s top goalscorers win the league, not the best defence. Wenger has said his team plays ‘risky’ football, but the rewards are potentially so much higher.
