Three things Arsene Wenger should do to keep Arsenal on track for the title

Persuade Aaron Ramsey He’ll Have More Freedom From The Flank

Ramsey’s return to fitness gives Arsenal an added dimension; a box-to-box goalscoring midfield player who Wenger has compared to Frank Lampard. However, he has struggled to get the most out of Ramsey since the 2013-14 season when he partnered Mikel Arteta in central midfield. Since then, it has been hard for Ramsey to find a partner in the middle of the park. Ramsey-Coquelin lacks a player who can receive the ball on the back foot and distribute from deep, Ramsey-Flamini was an even worse version of Ramsey-Coquelin, and Ramsey-Cazorla lacks a little bit of defensive nous. Granit Xhaka shares many of the same qualities as Arteta, so it he might be the ‘Goldilocks’ partner Ramsey has been looking for.

The Welshman’s best football in recent times at Arsenal has come from the right flank, though he has reportedly voiced his displeasure with having to play there. Ramsey’s best position might be as a No 8, but a wide starting role would relieve him of so much defensive responsibility. For Wales, Ramsey benefits from having two central midfielders behind him, Joe Allen and Joe Ledley. He could have this luxury at Arsenal too, even if the team sheet shows him starting on the wing. Arsenal always play with a wide player who is more like a third central midfielder; Robert Pires, Alex Hleb, Samir Nasri, Tomas Rosicky, Alex Iwobi. Ramsey won’t be stuck out on the touchline; Wenger will give him licence to roam across the frontline.
