Have A Plan For Dealing With Chelsea’s Wide Threats
In Iwobi, Sanchez and Walcott, Arsenal have a nicely balanced front three that looks well set to cause the visitors problems. However, it could pose Wenger a defensive issue. Due to the fact Sanchez likes to abandon the centre forward position to come to the ball, Iwobi and/or Walcott are tasked with being a second striker and occupying the opposition centre backs when Sanchez comes short. When it works, this can be a hard thing for defences to cope with, but can leave Arsenal undermanned in the wide areas.
Which is exactly where Chelsea’s main threats, Willian and Eden Hazard, are stationed. Theo Walcott has significantly increased his defensive output this season, buy might not always been in a position to get back and help Hector Bellerin. The Spaniard has had some good games against Hazard, but the Belgian is purring at the moment. On the flip-side, Hazard is not always the most diligent defensively so there could be an intriguing risk/reward battle on this flank. On the other side, Iwobi has not always performed his defensive duties to desired standard and Arsenal have had problems on that side. Nathaniel Clyne and Serge Aurier have given them a tough time already with Nacho Monreal isolated, and the combination of Willian and Branislav Ivanovic could do the same. Arsenal need a big defensive contribution from Walcott and Iwobi, and perhaps for the full backs to be a little more circumspect than usual. The good news for the hosts is that in the absence of Per Mertesacker, they have two centre backs who are comfortable defending one against one out wide.
