Grzegorz Krychowiak
Whilst most of the focus at Old Trafford will be directed at turning a side that looked so prosaic under Louis van Gaal into one that is a great deal more vibrant, there can be no doubt that under Jose Mourinho, there will be real work done to make sure that their goals conceded is one of the lowest in the top flight.
Under LVG last year, United had the joint best defensive record, although that has to be balanced by the fact that Tottenham, who also conceded 35 goals, were drubbed 4-1 by already-relegated Newcastle on the last day of the season, somewhat skewing their final number.
With that in mind, the foundations are there but perhaps the best way to reduce that figure would be to add steel to the midfield in front. Whilst Southampton’s impressive defensive midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin was not trusted by Van Gaal, that area does need reinforcement.
There are not many better to choose from on the continent than Poland star Grzegorz Krychowiak. A mainstay of his club side Sevilla’s last two Europa League triumphs, the midfielder has made 89 appearances for the Andalusian since his bargain €4.5 million move from Ligue 1 outfit Stade De Reims.
He would cost a lot more than that to take him from the Sanchez Pizjuan, but he would give United a midfielder that has been severely lacking, arguably since Roy Keane’s departure many years ago. There is likely to be plenty of suitors however, not least PSG, with the French champions set to appoint his Sevilla manager Unai Emery.
