Three stand-out performers Manchester United should target from Euro 2016

Alvaro Morata

There is no way of getting around the fact that over the last three years, United have looked nothing like the free-scoring teams that were loathed but secretly admired during the Ferguson era.

The decisions to sell Javier Hernandez, a valuable option emerging off the bench in many years under Ferguson, and more inexplicably Danny Welbeck, a Mancunian through and through, left Louis Van Gaal often chucking Marouane Fellaini up front. In the stupidity stakes, this is a choice that would come somewhere near the Belgian’s decision to dye his afro a garish blonde.

Last season’s top scorer Anthony Martial was the only Red Devil to have hit over ten league goals, and whilst young Marcus Rashford is a beacon of hope for a club so used to seeing a local lad break through and become a star, the need for another goal-scorer is obvious.

Step forward Alvaro Morata. The Spanish hit-man is likely to be pricey, as Real Madrid have recently activated his buy-back clause after his two-year spell at Serie A champions Juventus. Nevertheless, in Morata, Mourinho would get a striker who knows where the goal is.

Speedy but strong in the air, the Spaniard would be a valuable option at Old Trafford. However, it does depend on whether Champions League winners Real Madrid are bringing him back to stay or to sell. If it is the latter, Mourinho will inevitably face fierce competition.
