Three stand-out performers Everton should sign from Euro 2016

There is no question that last season was a major disappointment for Everton, whose 11th place finish didn’t reflect the young, particularly offensive talent, which Roberto Martinez had at his disposal.

In many people’s eyes, the Spanish manager; who won the FA Cup with Wigan but also took them down three years ago, flattered to deceive, as Martinez gave his players regular accolade without orchestrating results on the pitch.

Ultimately, he paid the price and the Toffees have since appointed ex-Southampton boss Ronald Koeman, who one would expect to tighten up a back-line which regularly leaked goals last campaign.

Whether Koeman can hang on to some of Everton’s prizes assets such as Romelu Lukaku and John Stones remains to be seen. In light of this, over the next few pages, here are just a couple of players he could look to sign following this summer’s European Championships. Let us know your thoughts on the selection in the comments below.

Fabian Schär (Switzerland and Hoffenheim)

Under former manager David Moyes, the bedrock of Everton’s success came in the form of a strong back-line. However, under Martinez their defending was; at times at least, nothing short of comical and cost them plenty of points.

Phil Jagielka has been a great servant for the Toffees but is now 33 years of age and has been troubled injury issues in the last 12 months.

John Stones clearly has undoubted talent and is good on the ball, however he needs someone to play alongside him whose primary objective is to defend.

Hoffenheim’s Fabian Schär could be that man. At 6 ft 1, he is strong, good in the air and could give Everton the solidity that they have missed over the past two seasons.

He is still only 24-years-old so if he was to partner Stones, the pair would still not be blessed with bags of experience.

Even so, Schär was one of Switzerland’s top performers in qualifying for Euro 2016, and he has also performed well in his country’s three group games at the tournament to date – in which they have only conceded one goal.

Schär has earned 21 caps for his country, scoring six goals in the process and is a threat from set-plays. He has made 22 appearances for Hoffenheim after signing for the German side from Basel in 2015 where he played 73 times.
