Three signings West Brom should make on Deadline Day

Odion Ighalo (Watford)

If Berahino is to leave the Hawthorns, Pulis will need to replace his quick movement and finishing ability. West Brom are not a free-scoring team and could do with reinforcements at the top end of the pitch. Ighalo, along with strike partner Troy Deeney, was a real force last season upon Watford’s return to the top division. The Nigerian was the top goalscorer for the calendar year 2016 across all four divisions. Ighalo is a pacy dribbler, and would certainly add some of the vibrancy and unpredictability that West Brom’s attack currently lacks. It doesn’t always seem as if he is in full control of the ball and, as the saying goes, if he doesn’t know then the defender doesn’t know either.

One concern would be that Ighalo has flourished as one half of a front two. Alongside Deeney, they form the classic ‘big man-little man’ combination. However, Pulis tends to favour a 4-5-1/4-3-3 with only one centre forward. This has proven an issue for Berahino, a similar type of striker to Ighalo, who has been asked to play out wide when has been selected. Ighalo is a fox-in-the-box, a goalscorer; he will not want the graveyard shift of running up and down the flank. If he could be incorporated into a front two however, Ighalo could prove an statue signing. Solomon Rondon is of similar stature to Deeny and Pulis might aim to recreate their partnership at the Hawthorns. The reported fee however is an eye-watering £32 million, but beggars can’t be choosers.
