Three signings to cement Tottenham as title contenders next season

Hector Herrera

Porto does a tidy business on young prospects, signing them for a pittance before frisking them to bigger clubs for eight figures, all while remaining competitive domestically and in Europe. Their successes are down to a spine that remains constant during this process. Herrera is part of the club’s furniture, a three season veteran and club captain. Unlike the club’s many prospects, he is also a proven talent. His performances for Mexico in the 2014 World Cup were impressive, and his outings during last year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup made him look the only genuine talent in all of North America.

Last season Porto struggled domestically, with the Benfica-Jorge Jesus rivalry leaving them a distant third in the league and reevaluating their options. If Spurs were to capitalize on this transitional period and sign the Mexican they’d have one of the world’s most underrated center-midfielders – one who might push his ceiling above the world class threshold in the more demanding environs of the Premier League.

While Spurs are replete with options in the center of the park, they have few two-way talents in the mould of Herrera. Wanyama and Dier are destroyers, Dembele has recreated himself as a deep-lying midfield metronome, and Alli’s anonymity at the Euros demonstrated he is more adept higher up the pitch. Herrera’s qualities as a box-to-box midfielder would give Spurs another gear against compact opposition and help them dominate the park against Europe’s best. This signing would not only provide Spurs a talented midfield option, but one whose skill-set lends another dimension to their style of play.
