Three signings to cement Tottenham as title contenders next season

Mauro Icardi

Spurs’ strike-force boasts last season’s top scorers in the Premier League and Eredivisie along with Clinton N’jie, they look quite comfortable in the striking department. Regardless, the signing of Mauro Icardi would be a coup for Spurs. The striker has huge potential, a scoring record of more than a goal every two games for a painfully cautious Inter side, and a superb winning mentality.

His last two league campaigns yielded 22 and 16 goals respectively, with his 2014-15 exploits earning him the Capocannoniere. He is already Inter’s captain at age 23, a nod to his voracious attitude on the pitch. Vincent Janssen on the surface looks a good talent, 27 goals in the Eredivisie and multiple Dutch call-ups, but he is still extremely raw.

Last season was his first in top-flight football, and his genuine quality in an intensely competitive league has yet to be tested. Should Kane encounter another blip in form like he did at the beginning of last season or during this summer’s Euros, Icardi would happily take on the onus of goalscorer and leader.

His qualities would allow Spurs to rotate between systems, either playing 4-2-3-1 or a more adventurous 4-4-2 variant, and ensure they don’t experience too many European hangovers. Worries that his presence would destabilize the team hierarchy are legitimate, but a Kane-Icardi partnership looks the league’s most deadly if Poch could make it work. This is a calculated gamble Spurs must take if they are to challenge the League’s reinvigorated top brass.
