A new goalkeeper
It has been just over two months since Tim Howard left Everton, yet a bona fide replacement has still not been brought in. Maarten Stekelenburg joined from Southampton in July and many subsequently expected him, alongside Joel Robles, to play the role of understudy to another new shot stopper. Joe Hart had been linked once it emerged that he had no future at Manchester but after Koeman ruled out any interest in the England international, who is set to join Torino on a season-long loan today, supporters began to wonder whether Stekelenburg had been signed with the intention of being first choice.
The Dutchman has started the season well enough, with some impressive performances helping Everton get seven points from their opening three matches, however, during unsuccessful spells with both Saints and Fulham, he has shown little to suggest he is capable of replacing Howard over the long-term.
Although there has been little talk in the papers of the Toffees signing a new goalkeeper today, it would not come as a huge surprise to see Koeman pull one out of the bag before the day is up. Sporting Lisbon’s Rui Patricio has been linked with a move to the Premier League this summer and although it looks as though the 28-year-old will be staying put for the time being, he may well be one potential option should Koeman decide to make a move. Of course, the Portuguese international would have to get to England to complete the deal fairly quickly. This would not be an issue with Chelsea’s Asmir Begovic, who has been linked with a move to Sunderland, but could surely be tempted to Merseyside should Everton want him.
