Three signings Sunderland could make on deadline day

James McCarthy

Ronald Koeman doesn’t seem to be a huge fan of James McCarthy and he could be available on deadline day. David Moyes is known to be interested in bringing the midfielder to the North East and he would improve the team straight away. He emerged as a key player under Roberto Martinez and has been a consistent performer in the Premier League. Sunderland need more fight in midfield areas and McCarthy could provide that. Last season, he averaged 2.7 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per game, which shows his ability to retrieve the ball. Sunderland haven’t dominated possession in any of their three matches and need players who can win the ball back. McCarthy would be a great fit.

The fee could be a problem, as Everton have placed a £20 million price tag on him and in the current market that is roughly what he is worth. Sunderland may be tempted to invest in McCarthy as he is proven in the Premier League. They look set to sign Didier Ndong for close to €20 million, but Moyes will look to add more than one central midfielder. If they don’t have the money to sign McCarthy, Sunderland could try to include him in a deal for Lamine Kone, as it is clear that the defender doesn’t want to stay in the North East.
