Newcastle have had a very busy summer, with Christian Atsu set to sign on loan today to become signing number 12. Rafa Benitez has been given control of the transfer policy and it has changed significantly as a result. The club are now open to signing British players and those over the age of 26, as shown by Daryl Murphy.
Newcastle have a strong squad ahead of the deadline and will be looking to add another winger to that on the day. It is possible that the club will make more than one signing today at St James Park, but in the same vein, it is impossible to predict their actions this summer. Here are three players I think they should target on deadline day:
Nathan Dyer
Dyer signed a new contract at Swansea during the summer, but has only played five minutes during the club’s first three games. Last season he was a part of Leicester’s squad that won the Premier League and has lots of experience at Premier League level that would be invaluable to Newcastle. He is a quick winger who is more than good enough to consistently influence matches at Championship level. The Englishman is direct and looks to beat his full back at every opportunity, which Newcastle have lacked this season. Benitez wants to add another winger to his squad and at the age of 28, Dyer will still be good enough to be part of the Premier League squad next season if Newcastle gain promotion.
Newcastle have been linked with several wingers over the past few days and they all have one thing in common – pace. Dyer fits into the profile of player that Benitez wants and he could be available as he is playing only a minor squad role at Swansea. There is money to spend at Newcastle and an offer between £3-5 million could be enough to convince Swansea to sell Dyer. He would be a great signing for the club and should be considered over the course of the day.
