Three signings Manchester United could make on deadline day
Transfer deadline day is here, and it’s always bound to be hectic for every club involved, whether that be through players coming into the club, or those footballers who have been shipped off elsewhere. Although Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho is expecting a quiet window, there is two potential targets that could still make a last-ditch move to the Theatre of Dreams.
Manchester United have been pushing hard to bring in another defender ever since getting the Paul Pogba deal over the line, and the man who has been constantly linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams is AS Monaco’s Fabinho.
The Manchester Evening News say that this deal could well happen, with their correspondent Stu Mathieson refusing to rule out the possibility of the 22-year-old moving to work with Jose Mourinho before the 11pm deadline.
Fabinho has been an ever present in the AS Monaco line-up for the last three years, playing over 100 games for the big-spending French side. His qualities have really shone through, and earned him a handful of caps for his country too.
This is a transfer that wouldn’t make all that much sense at this point in time to be brutally honest, but those rumours just won’t go away. Fabinho is clearly a huge talent, but with the form of Antonio Valencia, coupled with some solid back-up options like Matteo Darmian and Timothy Fosu-Mensah, you’d feel other areas on the field would benefit from that extra player instead.
This second rumour on this list just will not be put to bed until the window officially slams shut. That’s a move for Jose Fonte of Southampton. Several reports reckon that the 32-year-old could still switch his Saints colours for the famous red of Manchester United, but if any deal is to happen, they’ll have to act swiftly.
The veteran centre-half would be an astute piece of business if Mourinho can pull it off. He’d bring some much-needed experience to a youthful defence, and that leadership ability certainly wouldn’t go amiss.
Claude Puel would obviously want to keep hold of a man who has been at the spine of their team for way over five years now, but if the right offer comes in, the Portuguese international Fonte may find a deal too good to say no to.
The last man on the list is a relative unknown. Reports from The Independent say that Manchester United had scouts watching Diego Rolan, a Uruguayan striker who currently plies his trade for Bordeaux in the French Ligue 1.
Rolan, 23, scored ten goals in his 38 outings last season, and Mourinho sees him as a good option to have as he wouldn’t mind playing backup to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Although, it’d probably see a reduction in game-time for Marcus Rashford which would be a bitter pill to swallow.
Mourinho had scouts watching Rolan take on Nantes this weekend, but the report says United will have to move quick as Bayern Munich are also exploring the possibility of signing him.
