James McCarthy (Everton)
James McCarthy formed a strong midfield partnership with Gareth Barry during his first season at Goodison Park, but has suffered a loss of form and fitness in recent times. Many Irish fans will agree that McCarthy’s slack marking and tracking of runners was a fault for at least two of the goals they conceded at Euro 2016. However, there is a very good Premier League player in McCarthy, who has been linked with moves to Champions League clubs in the past. He has a great engine, is strong in the tackle and a tidy passer of the ball. If Palace’s midfield is to be occupied by the silky talents of Wilshere and Cabaye, it is vital that Pardew fills his midfield with the athleticism to cover the ground for them.
