Matthias Ginter
Arsenal’s priorities might lie further up the pitch, but Wenger has recently said that Arsenal remain active for a ‘defensive position’. Per Mertesacker is out of contract next summer and Laurent Koscielny is past the 30 mark. Arsenal have recruited Rob Holding already this summer, and already have Calum Chambers on the books as a well-regarded defensive prospect.
Some have suggested that Holding’s arrival is a signal that Chambers will be allowed to go out on loan in order to gain further experience as a centre back. However, as Wenger’s comments suggest, it is not out of the question that both could be loaned out with a view to the future and a more established figure brought in.
Matthias Ginter of Borussia Dortmund could be one such target. At well over six feet tall, Ginter will naturally be compared to his fellow countryman Per Mertesacker. Ginter made 24 Bundesliga appearances. Ginter won 56% of his duels last season and can also slot into defensive midfield should it be required.
Raphael Varane is an unrealistic target and given that Dortmund have lost Ikay Gundogan, Mkhitaryan and Mats Hummels they could well be unwilling to sell. Ginter is only 22, not that much older than Chambers and Holding, but his experience at a club of Dortmund’s stature ensures he could slot into Arsenal’s first team without much trouble.
