The signing of N’Golo Kanté

Leicester City won the Premier League last season and a major reason for them doing so was the signing of N’Golo Kanté. Chelsea have recognised his quality and brought him to Stamford Bridge. He has cost The Blues a great deal more than Leicester paid last summer, but he is one of the signings of the summer for the second year in a row.

His relentless work rate and aggressive ball winning skills have seen him emerge as one of the best central midfielders in Europe.

Claude Makelele was a pioneer in the holding midfield role and Kanté is following suit, introducing a new role into the game. The term advanced destroyer has been used to describe the Frenchman and it is an apt description of what he brings.

Unlike a traditional holding midfielder, Kanté is given freedom to cover the entire pitch and he is most effective in the attacking half. The Frenchman is excellent at winning possession in dangerous areas and this creates great opportunities for his side.

He is perfect for Antonio Conte as he demands aggression from his players and Kanté brings that in abundance. Alongside Matic, he provides great protection for the back four and wins the ball back in good positions, which allows Chelsea to launch attacks. It was an excellent signing by Conte.
